In Kashmir, firing across the Line of Control left four Indian soldiers dead. India said the Pakistanis started it. Rebel violence in Kashmir left ten dead.

There are 440,000 women in the northwest tribal territories eligible to vote in this weeks national elections. But some tribal chiefs say they will not allow women to vote, because of local customs. There are 72 million eligible voters in Pakistan.

Pakistani police arrested six Islamic conservative politicians and accused them of making inflammatory speeches and inciting violence.
