Pakistani clerics representing 8,000 religious schools told the government to withdraw its plan to regulate the schools or face massive demonstrations. The schools teach some 600,000 students (including some 18,000 foreigners) and preach hatred of non-Moslems, memorizing the Koran and not much else. The new government regulations require the schools to teach academic subjects, name foreign students and reveal funding sources. The schools have been a source of terrorists and the Taliban.
