In Kashmir, 12 died in rebel violence, including seven rebels, three policemen and two civilians.

In Pakistan, kidnapper Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh turned himself in, after several members of his family were taken into custody (a common technique to get suspects to surrender.) Sheikh is thought to be the leader of the Islamic militant gang that kidnapped the American journalist on January 23rd. Sheikh admitted this and said the American captive was still alive.

The US has declined to mediate the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. Meanwhile, India has refused to pull back it troops from the border, after an offer from Pakistan to do the same. India is still demanding that Pakistan turn over twenty terrorism suspects.
