Islamic fundamentalists in Pakistan demonstrated their power by hosting a conference of fundamentalists in Peshawar. One of the speakers was Osama Bin Laden, who called for holy war against America and other foes of Islam in Palestine, Chechnya and Kashmir. In Pakistan, the government, and particularly the military, are reluctant to move against fundamentalists. The only exception is the use of troops to arrest, and sometimes battle, Sunni and Shiite radicals. This religious strife has been going on for some ten years and has left over 3,000 dead. The violence has been increasing this year.
