Three Indian soldiers and two Muslim rebels were killed in a skirmish in Kashmir.
August 19; Two Muslim separatists and four Indian soldiers were killed in a gun battle inside Kashmir. Five Indian police were injured in a bombing attack. The artillery duels continued, with some civilian casualties.
August 18; India has introduced electronic warfare to its battle against Muslim militants in Kashmir. The militants have publicly complained that India has been jamming the frequencies that the militants have been using for the last ten years to communicate with each other. Indian and Pakistani artillery continue to exchange fire.
August 16; In a two hour fire fight right on the border, Pakistani troops fired on an Indian border post, killing one Indian soldier and injuring six others. The firing was apparently to provide cover so that Muslim militants could slip across the border. Indian gunfire forced the infiltrators back into Pakistani territory.
August 15; Over 300 artillery shells were exchanged across the Line of Control in Kashmir as Indian artillery opened fire and the Pakistani guns fired back. Several civilians were killed or injured.
August 14; Using rockets and rifles, Moslem militants killed three and injured nine Indian soldiers during an attack on an army camp in Kashmir. An army patrol was also ambushed farther north, leaving two Indian soldiers dead and injuring seven. In the first two weeks of August, over eighty people have been killed in Kashmir (militants, soldiers and civilians.)
August 13; Indian intelligence had originally assumed that Pakistan's efforts to send infiltrators into Kashmir to create an uprising was directed at disrupting the mid-term elections. New Delhi is now convinced, however, that Pakistan was inspired by NATO's intervention in Kosovo to create a situation in which outside forces might intervene (perhaps to prevent nuclear escalation). --Stephen V Cole August 12; An Israeli newspaper revealed that during the ten week war between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, Israel rushed vital military equipment (probably electronic) to India. The gear had been ordered before the war in Kashmir broke out. It's no secret that India and Israel have been cozy, as both have a common enemy in Pakistan. Attacks on Indian forces in Kashmir have increased, with Moslem rebels announcing they are doing it in revenge for the shooting down of the Pakistani patrol aircraft. Serious attacks are occurring daily.
