While violence declined sharply after the February 7th elections, the rate of violence has since returned to pre-election levels. The gangs have seen no benefit from the new government, and have returned to their old habits (kidnapping, robbery and extortion). UN peacekeepers and Haitian police have been unable to cope with the crime wave.
July 12, 2006: In the last week, growing gang violence in the capital has left at least twenty people dead.
