A large prison in the capital was attacked by a group of armed men and, apparently with the help of some bribed guards, some 481 prisoners were able to escape. Apparently the break-out was staged by criminal gangs, as some political prisoners (former ministers in the Aristide government) who got out, later turned themselves in.
