Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly
Zaire)
November 11, 2007: Aid operations were halted in
some areas because local civilians became violent when they were refused aid
supplies. In this case most of the locals were the families of soldiers, and
thus believed they were entitled to the supplies. Locals are often upset that
refugees get all these goodies from foreigners, and the locals do not. At other
times, refugees get violent because they have not received aid supplies as
quickly as they desired. Several dozen peacekeepers, police and soldiers were
injured dealing with the unrest.
November 10, 2007: UN and army troops are
assembling in the east, to make a final move against some 5,000 Rwandan Hutu
militias, and Congolese rebel Nkunda's 1,200 fighters.
November 9, 2007: Soldiers and rebels from
the Nkunda force, exchanged fire, as the army prepared to shut down Nkunda once
and for all.
November 6, 2007: In the northeast, the last three
tribal warlords surrendered, ending the eleven years of tribal warfare that
have left over 50,000 dead. The tribal conflict between the Lendu and Hema
tribes broke out as a side-effect of the civil war, and acquired a life of its
own.
October 31, 2007: In eastern Congo, most of
the Mai-Mai militiamen have surrendered. But Laurent Nkunda's Tutsi gunmen
still roam the area.
