Recent losses have not stopped the army from continuing their sweeps into areas long controlled by FARC, and other rebel groups. These aggressive combat patrols threaten valuable rebel assets. For example, FARC owns about twenty aircraft, often operating them off primitive airfields in rural areas they control. Now the rebels have to worry about the army capturing those airfields, either from the ground, or via helicopter assault.
December 24, 2005: Police found bomb making materials near a farm owned by president Uribe. Apparently someone was trying to assemble and plant a bomb. In central Colombia, FARC gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint, killing two civilians.
December 27, 2005: In central Colombia, a clash between the army and FARC, left 24 soldiers dead. The troops were ambushed.
December 20, 2005: FARC released 29 policemen they had captured during a large scale attack on a western town.
