The government has come up with a plan to help farmers get out of the illegal Coca growing business. The government would buy farmers current Coca crop, at a rate similar to what the drug gangs pay. But the Coca would then be destroyed, and the farmers would sign an agreement to crow Coca no more. If the farmers violated their agreement, they could go to jail. This plan may work for some, but Coca is such a lucrative crop, bringing in more money per acre than any other crop, that it will be hard to give up.

In western Colombia, FARC and AUC fought each other, leaving five dead, and 13 people kidnapped (who were later released). The gangs often fight each other for control of drug production operations.
