The negotiated disarmament of AUC continues, with 800 gunmen surrendering their weapons this month, for a total of 2,500. Many AUC rebels are wary of these deals, feeling that pressure from leftist American special interest groups will cause the government to renege on promises of amnesty. The leftist rebel groups (FARC and ELN) are much less reluctant to disarm. The AUC was originally formed to provide protection from leftist rebels, protection that the government was unable to provide.
