A national poll on the FARC proposal to free all kidnapped people in return for all imprisoned FARC members being released, found 46.5 percent in favor, 37.3 percent in favor and the rest undecided. The government does not want to do this, because FARC will simply continue to kidnap people. FARC needs the ransom money to pay salaries and buy weapons. The money obtained from the drug trade is not sufficient to maintain the 15,000 armed men FARC currently has on the payroll.
