While the army and police are increasing the pressure on rebels, there are also little wars within rebel groups. The AUC, originally formed to protect farmers from leftist FARC rebels, is now, like FARC, a warlord militia that controls drug production. But AUC has split, with a new organization, ACC (Peasant Self-Defence Forces of Casanare) formed from AUC fighters in eastern Colombia. The fighting that has accompanied this process over the last two weeks has left at least 15 rebels dead. The police are standing by to take advantage of the disorder among the AUC and newly formed ACC. But meanwhile, over a thousand local civilians have had to flee the  fighting.
