Despite being the world's largest producer of cocaine, the population didn't start developing an addiction problem until personal use of cocaine and marijuana was legalized in 1994. After that, cheap drugs became widely available and drug use increased 40 percent, and is still growing. Some nine percent of all 12-25 year olds in urban areas use drugs. Cocaine is much cheaper (about 95 percent cheaper) in Colombia, compared to the United States. Even with the lower income levels in Colombia, three dollars for a gram of Cocaine is still a lot cheaper than the $75 it would cost in the US. Public opposition to the spreading use of drugs has contributed to leftist rebels losing public support as well.
