Fighting between left wing guerillas and right wing militias in northern Colombia killed at least seventeen people in the last 24 hours. ELN guerillas also kidnapped one soldier and four civilians. The ELN is holding 37 people taken from a Cali church in May and fifteen taken in a airplane hijacking in April. The ELN is holding these people, and taking more, largely to force the government to negotiate with them. The ELN is the second largest guerilla group in the country, after the FARC.
