A Chinese army colonel has defected to the United States. The officer was an arms negotiator that had long worked as a liaison to the US military. Such an officer would have valuable information on the state of the Chinese armed forces and the negotiating position of the government over such things as Taiwan. China has confirmed that the officer is "missing." He was last seen in New York City in December, 2000. The US has admitted the colonel is in the US.
