China: June 25, 2000

Archives

The 50th anniversary of the Korean War again raises the question of how many troops China losses. China's official numbers, which the government admits are faulty because of haphazard record keeping at the time, admits to  148,000 killed, 215,000 wounded, 4,000 missing and 21,000 taken prisoner. US estimates have always been much higher, putting the dead and wounded at anywhere from  700,000 to over a million. The Chinese figures are probably closer to the truth. The US  suffered 142,000 casualties. South Korean dead, wounded and missing were about  400,000. North Korean losses are estimated at some 600,000.
