Several Kazakh reporters have shown up in Moscow in the past few days, saying that the Kazakh president has been using his secret police to suppress journalistic investigations of massive government corruption. They report that at least 22 media outlets have been closed by the police recently. All of Central Asian nations suffer from corrupt governments. While all of these nations have media that is not controlled by the government (a major change from the communist days), the governments have become quite sensitive to reports looking into how public funds are being stolen. The reports of theft are getting out, and unrest is increasing.
