Central Asian nations continue to battle two things from Afghanistan; Islamic radicals and drug smugglers. Despite a Taliban ban on poppy growing, the heroin producing crop is still cultivated in some parts of Afghanistan. So far this year, Russian border guards on the Tajik-Afghan border have seized 1.88 tons of heroin. The total for all of 2000 was only .8 ton. Although poppy crops were cut back in Afghanistan, there were apparently stockpiles of heroin waiting to be smuggled out.
