Gypsy (Romany) groups in Bulgaria are protesting an attack on a Romany man in the Bulgarian town of Pernik. The attack took place in late May. Throughout Eastern Europe crimes against Romany people have a history of going unpunished. Romany groups claim that in democratic Bulgaria the police are slow to act to protect them. The Romany, however, are now organizing anti-racism rallies and are copying minority defense and minority political advocacy techniques from the United States. (Austin Bay)
