Watch this one develop, since water is a true root cause of conflict between Turkey and Syria, one with more potential for conflict than Syria's support for the PKK. Because of drought in Turkey, the Turkish government announced that it has cut the water flow on the Euphrates River. The reduced water flow is well below the level agreed to by Turkey and Syria in their 1987 bilateral protocol on Euphrates River water rights. The drop in the flow from Turkish dams is from 500 cubic meters per second to 300 cubic meters per second. The Turk spokesman said that water levels are at their lowest level in ten years. Hydroelectric power production has also been reduced.
