On February 21, an Angolan government spokesman said that UNITA rebels had killed 93 people in a series of actions throughout the country. 48 were killed in an attack in Cassanguidi (Lunda-Norte province). A Portuguese citizen who works for the Angolan state diamond company, Endiama, was among the dead. 35 more people were killed in an attack near Cajiza and ten died in an ambush in the the southern province of Huila. The Angolan Army claimed it killed 20 UNITA rebels in the firefight at Cajiza. Also, a fascinating wire service report ran during the week discussing illegal arms sales in Angola. The report quoted Angolan Defense Minister Kundi Payama as saying that in 1993-94 France violated arms trading curbs and sold Angola around $500 million worth of arms.
