Angolan government forces claimed to have retaken the town of Cunhinga and killed 22 UNITA rebels. Press and Catholic Church sources also report a "dire humanitarian disaster" in Malanje, located 400 kilometers east of Luanda. Severe starvation has begun to occur in the Malanje area. The same sources estimate that since November 1998, when the UN peace agreement between the government and UNITA collapsed, 1000 people have been killed in fighting around Malanje.
