Algeria: Mopping Up the Terrorists at Home

Archives

January 14, 2006: The most able and active Islamic terrorists have apparently fled the country, and they are being detected, and sometimes arrested, in Europe, Canada and some Arab countries. Some have been found (usually dead) in Iraq and Afghanistan. These Algerians overseas often operate as part of the Algerian GSPC, or the Moroccan Islamic Combat Group. The GSPC has more success recruiting among Algerians in Europe, where memories of the atrocities and terrorist tactics of the GSPC in Algeria are dim. In Algeria, GSPC is seen as a bunch of bloodthirsty fanatics.

January 13, 2006: Police in western Algeria broke up an Islamic terrorist cell and made 13 arrests. Weapons, explosives, cash and false documents. The terrorists had used criminal activities to raise funds for their planned operations.

January 11, 2006: The army has surrounded some 40 Islamic terrorists in the Atlas mountains, where negotiations are under way for the terrorists to surrender and accept amnesty.

January 7, 2006: West of the capital, in the same area where armed Islamic terrorists were killed last month, nearly fifty people were arrested for supporting and protecting the terrorists. The support network was revealed when one of its members felt remorse and contacted the police. Many of these people had been terrorized into providing hiding places, information and food for the terrorists.

January 6, 2006: Some 330 kilometers southwest of the capital, Islamic terrorists killed four civilian government workers.

December 13, 2005: Troops clashed with about ten Islamic terrorists 160 kilometers west of the capital, killing four of them.
