The presidential election resulted in current president Abdelaziz Bouteflika was reelected with 83 percent of the vote (58 percent of eligible voters turned out.) International poll watchers declared the vote fair. Bouteflika got re-elected because he is generally regarded as responsible for winning a war against Islamic radicals which has, in the last dozen years, killed over 100,000 people (in a country of 32 million).
