The government is said to be negotiating with the former GSPC rebels holding 15 kidnapped European tourists near the Libyan border. In return for releasing their captives, the rebels are being offered either free passage out of the country, or amnesty according to the 1999 amnesty law.  The rebels are holding out for free passage and a large ransom.

Rebels ambushed and killed three policemen 600 kilometers east of the capital.
