Unrest grows throughout the country. First it was the Berbers, but now mobs of unemployed young men are demonstrating for all manner of shortages (jobs, transportation, housing, schools, roads). The government is fearful of a mass uprising similar to what happened in Eastern Europe in 1989 (to bring down the communist governments.) The current government is elected, but most of the politicians have been working for the same old crowd of revolutionaries who have been running the country for their own benefit since the 1960s. Ten years of fight Islamic radicals has left over 100,000 dead. Most Algerians are fed up with Islamic radicalism and corrupt government and many younger Algerians are ready to use violence to eliminate both.
