The FLN (National Liberation Front), which lost elections in 1991 (and staged a military coup to run the country since), won a majority in the May 30 elections. The rebels were Islamic radicals whose parties had won the 1991 elections. The population has turned against the rebels because of the rebel violence. Islamic radicals discouraged people from voting, and as a result, only 47.5 percent of eligible voters voted. Berber groups also urged people not to vote.
