Two battles, with wanted or hostile Afghans, last week resulted in the death of 16 children, and about a dozen adults. Many Afghans live in walled compounds, along with their families, farm animals and often lots of ammunition and weapons. In one of the cases where children were killed, it because the ammo and explosives stored in the compound exploded, collapsing a wall on the kids. Taliban, criminals and just about on the run in Afghanistan thinks nothing of taking refuge in such a compound, and fighting it out with any attacker. Danger to women and children is a secondary consideration.
