Taliban followers attacked a local government headquarters in eastern Afghanistan, stole weapons, burned the building and warned the government officials to leave and not come back. 

In the southwest (480 kilometers from the capital), police fought a local warlord (a former military commander), leaving at least 40 dead. The police were aided by armed men from two pro-government militias. Most of the dead were civilians caught in the crossfire. The leadership of the warlord group were killed.

A Turkish engineer, working on road construction, was kidnapped by Taliban fighters. It was demanded that several Taliban leaders be released by the government in return for the Turkish engineer.
