Afghanistan: June 10, 2003

Canada will reopen its embassy after 24 years and will send 1800 peacekeeping troops to Afghanistan.

The US has limited the movement of its diplomats in Afghanistan because of the risk of terrorist or Taliban attack.

In Eastern Afghanistan, American troops found three British Blowpipe portable surface to air missiles, still in their original shipping containers. Some Blowpipes were found in late 2002 as well. These date to the 1980s war with the Russians, and the Blowpipe batteries are dead by now. The Blowpipe is not as capable as the US Stinger, having a lower altitude (10,000 feet), shorter range (2.5 kilometers) and travels at half the speed. Still, the Blowpipe could bring down non-military transports. But no Blowpipes have been used in the area since the 1980s.

In another incident on the Pakistan border, American troops killed four armed Taliban.
