Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan is considered a no-go zone by aid organizations. The place is intensely religious and was the area that first, and most strongly, adopted the Saudi Wahhbi form of Islam (a very pious and strict form.) Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a very religious warlord from the 1980s, is still popular in Kunar. The area keeps going via the drug trade and smuggling in general. All that money, old time religion and lots of weapons makes for a volatile mix.
