  Thousands of Taliban and Northern Alliance fighters battle in the north. The Taliban is trying to take Taloqan in order to cut Northern Alliance supply lines from Tajikistan. The Northern Alliance also reported it is pushing back Taliban forces advancing on the Salang Tunnel, a key road bottleneck north of the capital. Fighting in the last few days has caused several hundred casualties on both sides.
