The Typhoon class submarine are the largest submarines built to date with a displacement of 33,800 tons. The Soviet name for the submarine was Akula. The Typhoon is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine and was deployed by the Soviet Navy in the 1980s. The submarine could remain submerged for months on end.
