Spain reports that 5% of its volunteer soldiers are women. Spain is scheduled to eliminate conscription by 2002 and use an all-volunteer force thereafter. Of the 5,749 women volunteers in uniform, 3,495 are in the Army, 1,003 are in the Navy, 771 are in the Air Force, and 480 are in "combined units" which include medical, administrative, judicial, and clerical units.--Stephen V Cole
