January 14, 2006:
Chile and Argentina have just agreed to create a combined peacekeeping force of about battalion size. It will stand up in August, and be ready to deploy in 2007. Each country will provide half the personnel, equipment, and funding. Command will rotate between the two countries, and the unit will switch bases every two years. While keeping with a trend among traditional peacekeeping nations to develop dedicated units for this sort of mission, the move is also intended as a confidence building step between the two traditionally hostile neighbors.
