December24, 2006:
In Kashmir, where India has been fighting Islamic terrorists for over
a decade, the increasing availability of cell phones has become a major
security problem. Jailed terrorists have been getting the phones smuggled in,
enabling them to communicate with the outside, and continue their terrorist
activities. Gangsters have been doing the same. In Kashmir alone, 1,100 Islamic
terrorists are in several prisons. So India is installing cell phone jammers,
at a cost of about $23,000 per prison, to make the cell phones within range
useless. India is not the only country having this problem, and the jammers are
becoming more popular as a security tool in jails.
