The war on terror is being fought with a largely unseen intensity in Iraq. While most of the al Qaeda operatives in Iraq are amateurs, many are intelligent men who, when captured, often undergo a change in their thinking. This has led to opportunities to achieve the heretofore impossible dream of Western intelligence agencies; spies within al Qaeda. The terrorists are aware of the threat, which they first encountered after the roundup of al Qaeda members in Afghanistan during late 2001. You dont hear much about this recruiting campaign, as neither side has much incentive to talk about it. Al Qaeda, being on a mission from God, cannot really admit the possibility that one of the faithful would work for the infidels. For the United States, and its allies, there is the need to protect the identities of any people they have inside al Qaeda. The terrorists have responded with brutality and threats of retaliation against family if anyone is caught working for the enemy. Al Qaeda has much to fear, for the United States has learned some very effective recruiting, and agent management, techniques, from the Israelis. Over the years, thousands of Palestinians were turned into agents for Israeli counter-terror operations, and this insider network had a lot to do with shutting down the the recent Palestinian terrorism campaign. There wont be much said about these agent recruiting efforts until after the war on terror is over. The terrorists have long memories, and a long reach, when it comes to traitors. So details will remain hidden simply because its a matter of life and death.
