: A Singapore navy anti-submarine patrol ship, the "Courageous," was hit by a container ship and nearly sunk on January 4th. The 500 ton, 180 foot long warship has a crew of 44 and one was known to be dead, with three others missing and eight injured. The 965 foot long Dutch container ship hit the Courageous towards the rear, crushing sleeping quarters and the engine compartment. This rear portion of the ship was sheared off and sank, but the rest of the ship stayed afloat and was towed back to port. The collision happened at 11:35 PM in the eastern entrance to the Singapore Straits, near the Pedra Banca lighthouse. The dead sailor, and the three missing and presumed dead, were all female. The Courageous carries a 76mm gun, Mistral anti-aircraft missiles and torpedoes, as well as sonar equipment for hunting subs. The Dutch container ship had minor damage and no injuries to its crew. The Courageous is a relatively new ship, having entered service in 1996.
