As of early June, the Navy had gotten it's ship deployments down to a more manageable level. Of the navy's 315 ships, 82 were at sea (75 deployed, the rest training). Of the 381,945 officers and sailors in the navy, 27,688 were deployed at sea. Under wartime conditions, the percentage of ships deployed can more than triple. During the early months of the Afghan war, the navy had more ships deployed, which led to more wear and tear on ships and equipment, and more sailors getting out of the service because of all the time they spent at sea.
