France has decided to design a naval version of its air-launched Scalp (built in Britain as the Storm Shadow) and Apache cruise missiles. The version for surface ships will be ready in 2011 (200 are to be built) and that for submarines in 2015 (with 50 to be built). The program will cost $690 million. Cruise missiles have been identified as one of the areas where European military forces cannot keep up with the US.--Stephen V Cole
