China has signed a contract to buy two more Sovremenny-class destroyers from Russia for $1 billion. The ships will be delivered in 2005. The contract includes options for two more ships. These will be an improved design beyond that of the two Sovremenny's already in Chinese hands, but it is not clear which of several alternative designs the Chinese selected.--Stephen V Cole
