Poland has three submarines, one Kilo-class boat that entered service in 1986 and is in good shape, and two old Foxtrots which must retire in 2003. The Navy wants to acquire two used submarines to keep the submarine force fully trained until it can afford to buy new subs (German Type-212s or Nordic Vikings) about 2010. France has offered Agostas, Germany has offered Type-206s, Norway has offered old Kobben-class boats, and Israel has offered two of the three retired British-built Type-540s.--Stephen V Cole
