Australia continues to have success with its Special Forces Direct Recruiting Scheme (SFDRS), which allows men to enlist specifically for service with the special operations troops. Australian commandos are highly selective, but they have obtained 145 qualified candidates out of 1,674 that have applied so far through SFDRS. The program began ten months ago. Australia normally recruits commandos from people already in the armed forces. Like the United States, about three percent of Australias armed forces are special operations troops. These included commandoes, long range recon patrols and troops similar to the U.S. Army Rangers. Australia is suffering far more losses to higher paying civilian jobs than they are to combat injuries. Australia also wants to expand its special operations forces. So a combination of more recruiting within the armed forces, and SFDRS, is being used.
