November22, 2006:
Greece is calling for German suppliers of tanks and submarines to
meet new contract terms, and the Germans are refusing. The tanks and subs were
purchased by the previous Greek government, and the new crew apparently wants
to score some political points by interpreting the contract terms differently,
and squeezing additional goodies out of the Germans. This bit of political
theater has little to do with the quality of the weapons, and much more to do
with Greek politics. The Germans are not displaying much sympathy for the Greek
demands, and apparently don't expect the Greeks to actually cancel the
contracts. The Germans believe that if the contracts issue went to court, they
would win, and that the Greeks don't want that kind of publicity.
