Israel has become the world's fifth largest arms exporters, selling $4.18 billion worth in 2002. This was a 70 percent increase over 2001. The major source of growth has been Turkey (mainly a $700 million deal to upgrade Turkish tanks) and India (where the US has agreed to allow the billion dollar sale of the Phalcon AWACs, which uses some American technology). The leading arms exporters are The US, the European Union, Russia and Japan.
