Oak Ridge National Laboratory is developing a new propellant based on water and aluminum which can provide more energy than conventional nitrocellulose-based propellants. An electrical device the size of a softball (powered by a single 1.5-volt battery) is used to detonate a shotgun-sized aluminum/water cartridge. The device can even be "dialed in" by the operator to produce various levels of energy (and lethality). Such ammunition would be safer and easier to store than conventional ammunition.--Stephen V Cole
