By the end of August 2002, the Russian government had allocated $9.48 million for the construction of a 1,000 family housing compound, modern training installations, chow halls ("mess facilities") and other installations for the 76th Airborne Division. Construction of the compound started on 1 July and is part of the experimental transition to professional army due to start on 1 September. The project involves six military construction units, as well as civil specialists.
Ultimately, $19.13 million will be budgeted in 2002 for the transition (out of a total of $84.5 million allocated for the division's transition). A total of $63.23 million will be spent army-wide on capital construction and the creation of new garrison infrastructure responding to the professional army demands.- Adam Geibel
