The first squadron of F-18E "Super Hornet" squadron (VFA-115) entered service in late June and is now on it's way to the Persian Gulf abroad the carrier Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). Although proposed as an improved original F-18 Hornet, the extent of the rebuilding, and the cost, over $80 million each, practically make it a new aircraft. The F-18E is meant to replace the 1970s era F-14s. Compared to the F-18, the F-18E carries a third more fuel (giving it about 40-80 percent more range), a more powerful engine, can carry more missiles and bombs and better electronics. Kuwait is considering buying the F-18E, so sending it to the Persian Gulf presents some marketing opportunities.
