Naval Air: June 30, 2002

Archives

The Navy has been steadily improving its carrier based E-2C Hawkeye radar planes. The next upgrade, the Cooperative Engagement Capability, will allow Hawkeyes to swap data with aegis warships. The Navy is building more Hawkeyes while upgrading what it has, and has been looking for a new engine to power the newly-built ones. Now it wants to refit this engine (once it finds it) into older aircraft in order to improve performance and reduce maintenance and fuel consumption. This provides a much bigger market for such an engine, but requires that it fit into the nacelles of the older Hawkeyes.Stephen V Cole
